Thank you for your interest in the Westlake Madrigals. Please read all the information carefully. Hopefully by doing this, your questions will be answered. If you can't find an answer to a question you have, please email me at mhatch@alpinedistrict.org
There are 3 musical sections to the auditions: Range, Pitch Memory, and Musical Literacy. I've made a video about how to record your range and the chorus of "America the Beautiful" for the pitch memory. There are also 3 screen recordings on how to do the sight reading portion from Sight Reading Factory website.
The audition portion for range and pitch memory can be completed in two different ways. The first is for you to record a video and then upload it to the provided google form. The second is to make an appointment through a google meet and do the audition "in person." If you choose the google meet, our district guidelines for virtual auditions state there must be another adult present in the "room" so you would need to arrange to have your parent in the same room as you when we have our google meet audition.
The best method for the Sight Reading material is with a computer with a internal mic so you can record the sight reading material. Any of the schools chromebooks that were available to be checked out have this capability. You can also download the Sight Reading factory app if you have an IOS device, or access it through a chrome browser with an android device. However, computers are the easiest way to access the material, If this is an issue and you don't have access to the material, please let me know and I will do my best to find a solution. The other material can be recorded with a cell-phone video.
I have virtual appointments slots and the google meet code available on May 19th from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM on the Westlake Choir Calendar. Appointment slots are every 15 minutes. Again, please let me know if you have any questions.
All audition material must be submitted by Wednesday, May 20th.
Range: Watch the video demonstration then do the following.
- Start your video
- Start at the mid range of your voice--either a D or an Eb. Announce your starting pitch in your video. Move up chromatically (half-steps) until you feel like you've reached the top portion of your voice that you can healthily sing. Announce the highest pitch you sang.
- Going down, begin on Bb above middle "C" for the women, and an octave lower, or a whole-step below middle C for the men. Descend by 1/2 steps until you feel like you've reached the lowest portion of your voice that you can healthily sing.
- End video
Pitch Memory: Watch the video demonstration, then do the following.
